What a business funding score can and cannot tell you

A company report, a website eligibility badge and a lender decision can look similar on screen. They are different pieces of evidence.

Felix considering the question
Felix’s first questionWhat is behind the headline number?

Quick answer

Is a funding score a lending decision?

Not by itself. Establish who calculated the score, what information it uses and what decision it is intended to support. A company credit report, an enquiry profile and a lender’s assessment have different purposes. None should be presented as another without a clear explanation.

Key points

  • Ask for the score’s provider, date, scale and purpose.
  • Reported answers and independently checked information are different.
  • An eligibility result needs a stated meaning.
  • Felix’s current enquiry does not retrieve a live credit report.

Start with the label underneath the number

A large number in a circle can feel precise. It may represent a reporting agency’s company risk model, a website’s own enquiry score or a result from a lender’s eligibility rules. The visual treatment does not tell you which one you are seeing.

Before using it, ask four questions: who produced it, when, from which information and for what purpose? If those answers are missing, the number is difficult to interpret. A score displayed to engage a visitor should not be mistaken for an approved amount or completed check.

A company credit report describes a record

Creditsafe’s explanation of company reports includes business identity and financial or credit information [1]. The scale and interpretation belong to that provider’s model. Different agencies can report the same company using different information or scoring systems.

A useful report review begins with the company number and date, then examines the supporting detail. Is the record for the right business? Which accounting period appears? Is an event current, historic or disputed? These questions can be more useful than deciding whether the number looks reassuring.

An agency’s suggested trade-credit limit also has its own intended use. It should not be relabelled as the amount a lender has offered the company. A funding application asks further questions about a particular commitment.

An enquiry profile organises a conversation

A lead-generation website can group enquiries using answers such as trading duration, reported turnover, requested amount and timing. That can help a team understand the brief and decide what to clarify. It does not establish that those answers have been independently checked.

For example, reporting a normal monthly turnover and matching a registered company are separate steps. Validating the format of an email address is different from confirming control of its mailbox. A quality process records what is known and what remains to be checked, rather than hiding both behind one badge.

Funding Felix keeps these distinctions in the enquiry record. Its provisional profile is an internal aid for human review, not a credit score, an approval or a promise of broker acceptance.

Even eligibility needs a precise meaning

A provider may use an initial rules check to establish whether a business can proceed to an application. That result still needs a definition. iwoca’s lending API documentation explicitly distinguishes eligibility to apply from a guaranteed approval [2].

When a website says “eligible”, look for what happens next and what remains outstanding. Does the result relate to a product category, an initial provider rule or a completed assessment? Ask whether the figures are reported or verified and whether a further search or document review is required.

The word should help explain a process. It should not make several incomplete steps disappear.

What Felix can show today

The business credit area provides explanations and a saved request for a conversation about a report. Live Creditsafe retrieval is not connected. We do not fill an empty gauge with an invented number or describe a saved request as a completed credit check.

Connecting a provider involves authorised access and an agreed process for company matching and report use. Until that is in place, the available feature remains the conversation request. The page tells visitors that before they send it.

The funding enquiry separately records the business brief and contact permission. A reference confirms that the record was saved; it does not confirm finance availability.

Use the result to ask a better next question

If you have a real report, check the underlying detail and bring it to the broker conversation with current trading information. If a result is an initial eligibility check, ask which conditions remain. If it is a website profile, ask what has actually been verified.

That approach turns the score into a useful piece of context. It keeps the important decision attached to the evidence and written terms of the actual proposal, where the company can assess the cost and commitment.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers

Does the Felix enquiry affect my credit file?

The current form does not run a live company or personal credit search.

Is an enquiry tier a Creditsafe score?

No. A provisional enquiry profile and a provider’s company credit score are different.

Can eligible still mean further assessment is needed?

Yes. Read the provider’s definition and outstanding conditions.
